What is the first thing you think about when someone mentions Valentine’s Day? Do you get excited? Do you feel anxious or depressed? How do you celebrate the holiday? Or do you disregard it as just another day?
If you said all of the above, I understand completely! I’ve experienced all those feelings throughout the years depending on my relationship status and how much LOVE I was expressing to MYSELF! Even if you are single, alone, divorced, or any of those dreaded words that most people don’t want to be described as around Valentine’s Day, you can celebrate the day loving yourself, your family, your friends, your furry friends, your co-workers and anyone you meet that day. Hey, a smile can be one of the most loving gifts you give!
Do you know the history behind Valentine’s Day?
It seems there is a lot of speculation and debate over who and how many “Valentines” are behind the celebratory day. The most frequent story/historical account suggests Saint Valentine was a priest in Rome who was executed on February 14, 269 AD. There is continued debate about why he was martyred. Some say it was because of his faith, while others say it was because he was marrying couples in Rome so that men could avoid military service. Since the historical details surrounding Saint Valentine are not well-documented, many parts of the story have been stretched or told with emphasis on the “romance” aspect.
